The New York Jets season has come to an end and if you are a Jets fan, the word “finally” definitely applies to what was yet another dreadful season to watch. A year that was once again filled with Injuries and inconsistencies on both sides of the ball. After a 1-7 start, General Manager Darren Mougey made two huge moves trading their two top players on defense in Sauce Gardner (Colts) and Quinnen Williams (Cowboys).

The Jets ended the campaign with a win-loss record of 3-14, another last place finish for Gang Green in the AFC East division. Let’s dive into why it was such a hair-pulling year for Jet fans.

Head Coach Aaron Glenn was faced with many tough obstacles throughout the season. One of those was the significant instability at the quarterback position. After signing a two-year/$40 million deal with New York last off-season, Justin Fields did not pan out the way Coach Glenn thought he would. His poor quarterback play led to his benching and perhaps the end of his time in New York.

The defense and offense failed to help each other out all season. The offense featured several self-sabotaging drives failing to score and score early in games. They simply could not generate points. With key injuries to the offensive line to players like Alijah Vera-Tucker amongst others, the line was very inconsistent allowing a high sack rate. The O-line had many combinations plugged in all year due to Injury.

All of this led to the Jets once again being on the wrong side of history. The team became the first NFL team to end the season losing five straight games by 23-plus points, a testament to the team’s lack of competitiveness due to the trades and injuries.

The defense was just as bad and got even worse after the departure of Gardner and Williams. They finished dead last in the league (31st overall) in points allowed and 27th overall in rush defense. The Jets’ defense allowed a total of 468 points this season, which ranks as the second most in franchise history.

To add more unfortunate luck this year, the Jets became the first team in NFL history to go an entire season without an interception. Interceptions became an official stat in 1933.

Now that we can finally put a bow on this year, the question moving forward for the Jets is what now? Well, first things first, Mougey needs to find himself a quarterback, whether it be through free agency, trade, or the draft. Notable quarterback names as possibilities could be Kyler Murray, Kirk Cousins, Jacoby Brissett and Marcus Mariota.

The Jets will have roughly around $95 million in cap space to bolster many holes the team has such as the offensive line and perhaps adding a key veteran talent or two. The team will also need to add an offensive coordinator with a consistent play-calling repertoire and a quarterback coach with some NFL experience. The Jets currently hold multiple high draft picks in this Year’s draft including the No.2 overall pick.

Which puts them in good position to secure a top-prospect out of college. Whatever the Jets try to do, it must be a huge step that will eventually make their team good enough to compete and snap a now 15-year playoff drought.

Sports Notes: (Basketball) The New York Knicks will head to the West Coast for the first time this year. The team will head to Phoenix to battle the Suns tomorrow night.
